You say FB sees India as an easy, vulnerable target. But it cannot manipulate India without duping Modi. And I don’t think Modi is a man who is susceptible to manipulation. His government is unlikely to compromise on net neutrality after Indian users gave it such a big thumbs down. Digital India is Modi’s ambitious project to modernise India and it will surely require the contribution of global tech giants. It is creditable that Modi availed of the opportunity to interact with the CEOs of top US tech companies and impressed them too.

Modi has been able to carve a niche for himself in an office which had hitherto become the preserve of a pseudo-elitist family. He had a successful trip to the US; what was galling were the comments back home. NRI PM, stage-managed crowds, sartorial issues, dishonest sentimentality etc. They were puerile and reeked of jealousy.
