Viewer preference has clearly shifted from big-budget superstar movies to films showcasing characters one can relate to. Once, viewers would not miss a single movie of their favourite hero or heroine, but that is no more the case, not with the Khan trio, or Katrina, Deepika, Priyanka or Kareena. Which is why the Ranbir-Anushka big-budget Bombay Velvet flopped at the box-office and the lesser- known Kangana-Madhavan starrer Tanu Weds Manu Returns raked in Rs 100 crore in no time. Kangana shot to fame when Queen was named best film at the 62nd national film awards and she was adjudged best actress (The Girl Who Has Kicked a Hornet’s Nest, June 8). The stunning success of a medium budget heroine-oriented movie was all to her credit, less of a superstar, more of the girl next door.

Why do you test the ‘tameability’ of your valued readers every now and then with your cinema obsession, Outlook? Instead, you can well start a magazine called Outlook Cinema on the lines of Outlook Money and Outlook Traveller. Your readers will be spared rubbish for their 40 bucks and you the bucketful of rants that will come your way.
