Apropos the Outlook special on India’s top professional colleges (June 27), Indian education is increasingly becoming assembly line, with the quality of its products not the same as before. What else can one expect when politicians who are sometimes not even graduates decide the fate of education? So many of them are now owners of education enterprises, dispensing degrees to those who have the money. Simultaneously, with the young population of India growing, there’s pressure on India’s top colleges, which can perhaps be eased if they opened more branches.

IT-BHU has been way ahead of the IITs but always relegated to sixth or seventh place because it did not have the IIT tag. With that changed, it is only a matter of time before IIT-BHU surges ahead of all others.

The selection process second-best in IT-BHU? Better than IIT-B or BITS Pilani? These should be placed way above IT-BHU just for not having reservation.

The selection to all IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad is made through the same IIT-JEE and this includes IIT-B too. So, if Outlook has assigned different marks for selection procedure, they must have considered other criteria, which they have chosen not to disclose. I will not comment on the kind of exam bitsat is. BITS Pilani is also a prestigious institute, but its programme is totally different from any of the IITs. And since it is private, it is not binding on them to have reservations. And even the students who come through reservation are JEE-qualified candidates.

I am from Chhattisgarh and know for sure that NIT Raipur is the best here, followed by the Bhilai Institute of Technology and then Rungta College. But you put Rungta above the other two. Now this is what I call paid journalism.

How can NIT Trichy get more points for selection procedure than ISM Dhanbad? To get into ISM Dhanbad, you need to crack IIT-JEE, for god’s sake! As for industrial interface, it has the largest alumni base, not surprising for a college which started in 1926. Its industrial relations are as good as any of the IITs, if not better. And it has a track record of 100 per cent placement with an average package of over 6 lakh a year. You should not disclose the parameters for these rankings—that would be embarrassing.

Your ranking methodology is mind-boggling! How can you the exclude the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur (West Bengal), from the list? Where is the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur, which is going to get national status very soon? One cannot understand the basis on which so many third-grade private colleges have made it to the list and the aforesaid institutions have been coldly rejected!

In your rankings of engineering colleges, you list PEC University of Technology as ‘PEC University of Technology, Punjab University’. This is incorrect; PEC University has nothing to do with Punjab University. PEC University is a deemed university by the UGC Act. This shows you have not done complete research. In the personality development and placements parameters, you have placed pec University way below other colleges. In reality, these are the main criteria the university is known for.

I don’t know about other cities, but as a long-time resident of Hyderabad, I read with amusement some of your conclusions. Gandhi Medical College superior to Osmania Medical College! The latter does not even find any mention although all top students rush there! And JNTUH College of Engineering a private one? Or Muffakham Jah College of Engineering in the top five in Hyderabad! You have got to be joking.
